Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, more formally known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to improve the appearance and function of the upper and/or lower eyelids.

This procedure is commonly used to address eyelid drooping associated with aging that leads to both vision difficulties and cosmetic insecurities. Although there are other non-surgical treatments for drooping eyelids and saggy skin around the eyes, only eyelid surgery can offer a permanent fix.

As we age, our eyelids can start to droop as a result of sagging and wrinkled skin around the eyes. Although age causes you to lose skin elasticity everywhere, this effect is most prominent around the eyes. Droopy eyelids can decrease your self-confidence, as well as your vision in some cases. For these reasons, many people choose eyelid surgery.

Did You Know?

In some cases, droopy upper eyelids may be caused by a condition known as ptosis. Ptosis happens when the upper eyelid muscle becomes stretched. In these cases, a different surgical approach is needed.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical approach that removes excess skin and fat, repositions remaining fat, and tightens the skin around the eyes. This lifts droopy eyelids and gives your eyes a younger appearance.

How Your Eyes Can Change

  • Remove fatty deposits in the eyelids
  • Lift baggy upper eyelids
  • Reduce heavy bags and wrinkles under the eyes
  • Remove excess skin from below the eyes
  • Tightens remaining skin to give the eyelids a youthful contour
A Streamlined Process

What to Expect

IV sedation or general anesthesia will be used so you can sleep during the procedure.

During the procedure, your plastic surgeon will make one or more incisions in the creases of your eyelids.

They will then remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten muscles, and remove excess skin.

Finally, the incisions will be closed with sutures or skin glue.

Recovery Process

  • May experience swelling and soreness around the surgical area for 10-14 days
  • The incisions take several weeks to heal
  • As swelling subsides, you will start to see the results of your eyelid surgery.

By removing excess skin and fat, repositioning remaining fat, and tightening the skin around the eyes, a blepharoplasty can lift droopy eyelids and give you a youthful appearance. Unlike non-surgical treatments, eyelid surgery yields dramatic results that are long-lasting and allow your eyes to age gracefully.
